Unfortunately, I live thousands of miles away from my mother and father. Even if your distance is shorter from your parents, it still comes with a price of not being able to see each other as much as one may like. Thankfully, we live in a time where seeing someone’s face or sharing a moment is just a click away. Of course, it’s not the same as seeing each other, but makes the distance between us more manageable.
My mother lost her mother when she was just 61 years old. I never got to build those sweet grandma memories with her. I cannot imagine losing one’s mother so early on. My mom talks about her mother a lot and carriers the sadness of not having done enough together. Something she once told me really stuck with me: “She said I wish I had paid more attention to her while I was building my career, I wish I had taken the time and slowed down to be more present while she was around.”
Now when I see my mother I try to pack in as much mother-daughter time as possible so that we build those special memories for us both.
Here are a few ideas to make your mother’s heart jump for joy.
1. Plan a special activity with her. How special is the time when it is just undivided attention of you and your mother. Plan a day that is dedicated to catching up and sharing a few laughs. A trip to a nursery together followed by some gardening. A visit to her favorite museum would really be appreciated. Of course, a shopping spree will always excite. My mom loves shopping when she is in U.S, so I know I can win her heart by planning a special day of try-on’s and a glass of wine afterward.
2. Make her happy by a small gesture. Every mother is different, you’ll need to determine what makes your mom happy. Think about those times when you caught her smiling. Use your memories to bring another smile to her face. It could be a list of things you learned from her over the years, or a letter telling her how much you love her. You could collect or print some favorite picture to create a photo book in her honor.
3. Simply talk to her. You will be surprised how much she still has not told you about her past, her upbringing or her past adventures. Gather those stories so you can pass them on to your little ones. Be present and truly listen to her and you will surely be surprised at her appreciation. This open ear and open mind might be the biggest gift of all to her.
A mother is the most important woman in everyone’s life, treat her every day like it is the last day together.
Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers, grandmothers, step-mothers, God-mothers and mothers at heart.
